The Hong Kong authorities terminated their twelve year series of gold $1,000 marking the Chinese Lunar calender in 1987, the Year of the Rabbit. In the following year, to mark the Year of the Dragon — in Chinese tradition the most auspicious, noblest and powerful of creatures — 950 crown-size gold medals, 12,000 gold medals of $1,000 size and 20,000 silver medals were struck.
