David Dunn was born in Leith, near Edinburgh and enlisted there at the age of twenty one, on 2 August 1800. He was a Sergeant in Captain Payne's troop at Waterloo, where he was severely wounded. Admitted to Chelsea Hospital on a pension of 1 shilling per day, 15 May 1817, in consequence of 'spitting of blood from fractured ribs by falling with two horses killed under him at Waterloo, and wounded left leg the same day.' His conduct was described as 'extremely good, behaved with great gallantry at Waterloo June 18th, 1815.'
