D.C.M., London Gazette, 3 September, 1919. 'During the period 25th February to 16th September 1918, his conduct in carrying out his duties as Scout Sergeant was exemplary. During July and August, whilst in the Essars and Loisne Sector, he showed courage and determination in leading daylight and night patrols into the enemy's lines. On several occasions, on his own initiative he took out daylight patrols, gaining important and valuable information as to the enemy's positions, etc., during the latter's retirement on that front.'
