South Africa 1834-53 (J. Newman, 45th Regt.) some severe edge bruising, otherwise better than good fine £150-180
John Newman served with the Reserve battalion in the 2nd and 3rd Kaffir Wars. Both the 1st and Reserve battalions of the 45th Regiment saw active service on the frontier, but it was the latter who were more heavily engaged during 1846-7. After the battalions merged in 1850 the Reserve became the left wing and bore the brunt of the 45th work in Kaffraria during the 3rd War (Ref The South Africa 1853 Medal by G. R. Everson).
