Edward Hayes was born at Radcliffe, Lancashire, and joined the 20th Hussars on 1 September 1890, having previously served in the Duke of Lancaster’s Own Yeomanry. Sold with copy service papers which confirm medal and clasps and also record that he was imprisoned for desertion on four separate occasions.
