Family group of three: Private John Borland, 2nd Dragoons, and Sergeant John Borland, Berkshire Regiment

Crimea 1854-56, 3 clasps, Balaklava, Inkermann, Sebastopol (2nd Drs.) the Balaklava clasp is a copy and medal renamed; Turkish Crimea 1855, British issue (2nd Drs.) named in the same style; Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., small letter reverse (618 Sergt., Berks. R.) all with silver ribbon buckles, the first pair nearly very fine, the last very fine (3) £200-250

John Borland senior was born in the Parish of Larbert, Falkirk, and attested for the 2nd Dragoons at Glasgow on 5 June 1850, re-engaged on 5 June 1862, and was discharged on 16 September 1865. His papers note ‘Slight wound by Sabre on Right Shoulder received in the action of Balaklava, 25th October 1854’.

John Borland junior was born in Edinburgh and enlisted into the 49th Regiment at Dublin on 4 October 1864, aged 14 years 1 month. He saw no active campaign service, was awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal with £5 Gratuity on 9 August 1883, and was finally discharged on 26 August 1890. He had been promoted to Sergeant in March 1876, to Band Sergeant in July 1883, and transferred to the Berkshire Regiment, as Sergeant Drummer, in February 1884. Sold with copy discharge papers for both father and son.
