M.M. London Gazette 27 January 1944 (R.A.M.C., attd. Special Service Troops). The recommendation states: ‘During the operations at Termoli between the 3rd and 6th December 1943, this Non Commissioned Officer set a fine example of courage and determination. After working continuously for 36 hours with the Medical Officer he went up to the line and joined his unit as a Medical Orderly.
When his troop was ordered to withdraw to the main position he remained behind with a casualty. He was there under continuous mortar fire. He then assisted to carry a casualty through a gorge and over 200 yards of open country, although he was physically exhausted and under mortar and machine-gun fire. He brought the casualty to the Regimental Aid Post and then collapsed and had to be evacuated in a complete state of exhaustion. His conduct throughout the operation set a magnificent example to his comrades.’
