India General Service 1936-39, 1 clasp, North West Frontier 1937-39 (Lt. R. D. S. Bulkeley, 2-8 G.R.) extremely fine

Major Richard David Spencer Bulkeley was born in January 1916 and educated at Bradfield College. He was killed in action in Burma on 14 June 1944. The following extract was taken from “The History of the 8th Gurkha Rifles 1824-1949”:
‘Major R. D. S. Bulkeley, commanding “C” Coy, 3rd Bn., 8th Gurkha Rifles, was killed leading his foremost section in an unsuccessful night attack on the Japanese positions west of the Company’s positions at Wooded and Wireless Hills. It was a difficult operation carried out on a dark and misty night, and resulted in the deaths of ten Gurkha ORs plus thirty-eight wounded in addition to the loss of Major Bulkeley.’
