“For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the enemy offensive in March 1918, when, in command of his company owing to officer casualties, he handled it with great energy and resource. Subsequently, in the recent advances, he showed great courage and initiative in organising patrols, and his utter disregard of danger in an attempt to cross the river Scheldt.”
