M.M. London Gazette 8 November, 1957: 4099061 Sergeant John Frederick Molyneux, Royal Air Force Regiment.
“For his skill, tenacity and bravery on 27th January, 1957, when No. 10 Armoured Car Squadron, under his command was involved in an action with No. 9 Squadron against Yemini Army Forces.”
Further details were published in
Flight magazine on 22 November ,1957: ‘Action on 27th January, 1957, on patrol when fired on from north of Sanah, the Squadron prepared to withdraw when engaged by heavy fire by elements of Yemeni forces who had advanced from Kataba. They were immediately engaged by rifle and machine gun fire and are considered to have suffered 30 casualties. The action continued for the better part of the night until the Yemeni were forced to withdraw. The Yemeni force was estimated to be, at least, 500.’
A total of 15 Military Medals were awarded for service in the Arabian Peninsula during the period 1950-60, this award being unique to the R.A.F. Regiment. In addition the regiment won three M.M.’s in South East Asia 1945-46, and four in Malaya. Sold with a group photograph which includes the recipient who was commissioned in 1962 and retired in 1964.
