D.C.M. London Gazette 29 August, 1917: “For conspicuous gallantry in action. Although not one of the bombing parties, he threw bombs all day, and when our own shells were falling short and causing some casualties, he went forward into the fire zone and replaced a red flag that had been knocked down, thus showing our real position and saving the lives of his comrades.”
