An extremely rare Cyprus M.M. pair awarded to Corporal W. P. Jones, Welch Regiment

M.M. London Gazette 14 April, 1959.
“Corporal Jones served as a section commander in the Anti-Tank Platoon of “D” Support Company of the 1st Battalion. Whilst on patrol in August 1958 during a time of inter-command disturbance in Komi Kebit he found a wounded Turkish Cypriot-one of three who had been shot by Greek Cypriots. His prompt and energetic action to obtain and report information, in spite of language difficulties, paved the way for the arrest, later in the day, of the terrorists responsible, who were subsequently convicted and sentenced to death.
At Tavros
on October 1, a vehicle patrol, of which Cpl. Jones was second-in-command, was ambushed at night with bombs and small-arms fire. He at once returned the fire and took resolute action in support of his patrol commander. An arrest was made.
On the next night Cpl. Jones was in command of a patrol visiting the water pump at Ephtakomi. His suspicions were aroused and he ordered the vehicle to stop, whereupon a mine was electrically detonated less than 10 yards in front of the truck. Once again he took rapid counter action, as a result of which an arrest was made. There is no doubt that Cpl. Jones’s alertness saved the vehicle from destruction and its passengers from serious injury or death.
In addition to these specific instances, Cpl. Jones at all times showed a keen desire to take part in anti-EOKA operations and to get to grips with terrorists.’
Sold with a good amount of original documents including letters of congratulation. Only four M.M.’s were awarded during the internal security operations in Cyprus 1955-59.
