Sjt., R.F.C.); Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 5 clasps, Cape Colony, Defence of Ladysmith, Orange Free State, Laing’s Nek, Belfast (742 Sapr., R.E.); King’s South Africa, 2 clasps (742 Lce. Corpl., R.E.); 1914 Mons Star (15 Sjt., R.F.C.); British War and Victory Medals (15 S.M. 1, R.F.C.); Army L.S. & G.C., G.V.R. (15 Sjt., R.F.C.) the Boer War pair nearly very fine, otherwise good very fine (7)

D.C.M. London Gazette 23 June, 1915, details 30 June, 1915: ‘For conspicuous zeal and devotion to duty, and the noticably efficient manner in which he has carried out his responsible duties.’
T Hughes enlisted in the Royal Engineers on 26 January, 1897, and served in South Africa during the Boer War. He is shown as Corporal in 2nd Balloon Company (Dismounted) R.E., 11 July, 1910; Sergeant, 2 Company Balloon School (Dismounted) on mobilisation of the Air Battalion R.E. He served as a Sergeant with the Aircraft Park in France from 16 August, 1914, and was promoted Technical Warrant Officer, 19 August, 1916, and in 1918 was a Chief Master Mechanic.
L.S. & G.C. awarded in
A.O. 125 of April, 1917. One of only 30 Army L.S. & G.C. awarded to the Royal Flying Corps.
