18th Century, Durham, Sunderland, R. Burdon, Denton’s Penny, 1796, view of iron bridge with two vessels passing beneath, reverse legend in wreath (DH 3). Struck over an Anglesey Penny token (as all are), of which traces and the edge remain, extremely fine with a hint of original colour, very rare (£180-220)

Rowland Burdon, MP for Durham, was one of the principal financiers of the Sunderland iron bridge, constructed between 1793 and 1796, and demolished in 1929
