William Walsh was born at Duncannon, Waterford, in 1809, and enlisted at Limerick on 26 March 1825. For more than a decade he served with the 41st Regiment at various stations in India and Burma, but he was an insubordinate soldier and was frequently imprisoned for a variety of offences, mostly drink related. In November 1837 he was sentenced to 12 months’ solitary confinement. Walsh participated in the campaign in Afghanistan where he earned the medal for Candahar, Ghuznee and Cabul, but on his return to Karachi was court martialled for the fifth time in November 1842 and received 100 lashes. In February 1843 he was embarked in the Margaret, one of three transports in which the 41st sailed for England, but the Margaret was shipwrecked off Mauritius and Walsh did not reach the invalid depot until October 1843. He was discharged at Chatham as unfit for further service on 26 January 1844. Sold with copy discharge papers.
