Gregory Lewes Way was appointed Ensign in the 29th Foot on 17 February 1832, and joined the regiment in Mauritius. He was promoted to Lieutenant on 30 July 1836, Captain on 21 May 1841, and Major on 8 December 1846. After returning form Mauritius, he subsequently served in England and Ireland before embarking for India where, in 1849 he took part in the Second Sikh war. He was present at the battles of Chilianwala and Goojerat, and the pursuit of the enemy to the Jhelum, being mentioned in Major-General Sir Walter Gilbert’s despatch for his services during the former battle. A letter from Major Way to Captain Drake (in England) after the battle of Chilianwala, dated January 14th, was reproduced in The Green ‘Un in January 1925.

Major Way proceeded on leave to England in April 1850, and retired on 9 July 1850. Just before his death he presented a magnificent silver centrepiece to the 29th Regiment, still in their possession. He died at Wick Hall, Brighton, on 14 January 1889. Sold with a copy of his letter and several photographs of the centrepiece.
