Isaac Stephenson was born at Lancaster in 1827, and enlisted at Manchester on 27 July 1849. He served in the Crimea from July 1854, and was present at Balaklava, Inkermann and Sebastopol. From July to December 1855 he is shown as being in hospital at Scutari, and embarked for England in February 1856. He was promoted to Corporal in December 1857, and purchased his discharge at Aldershot on 11 March 1859.

The 4th Dragoon Guards had one man killed and five wounded in the Charge of the Heavy Brigade at Balaklava on 25 October 1854. Eight men were awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal.
