Thomas Knevitt was born at Hoxne, near Eye, Suffolk, and enlisted for the 2nd Dragoons (Scots Greys) at Ipswich on 30 October 1843, aged 18 years 11 months, and given regimental number 800. Eight days later, his two brothers also joined up, John, aged 20, and Henry, aged 17 years 11 months. They were given numbers 803 and 802 respecively. Thomas Knevitt served with the Scots Greys in the Crimea and Turkey for 1 year 11 months, and was present at the battles of Balaklava and Inkermann, and the siege and fall of Sebastopol. He received his L.S. & G.C. medal with £5 Gratuity on 1 May 1865, and was discharged at Dundalk on 31 March 1868.

The Scots Greys had two men killed and fifty-six wounded in the Charge of the Heavy Brigade at Balaklava on 25 October 1854. Seven men were awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal.
