George Brew was born in the Parish of St Mary’s, Wolverhampton, and enlisted into the 80th Foot at Wolverhampton on 29 June 1876, a puddler by trade. He went to South Africa in February 1878 and returned to England in May 1880. In August 1881 he was placed on the Army Reserve but was recalled for service in Egypt from April to December 1882, for which he is also entitled to the Egyptian Medal. He was again placed on the Army Reserve in February 1883, and was discharged at Lichfield on 28 June 1888 in consequence of the termination of his first period of Limited Engagement.
