John Mervin Nooth was originally commissioned as Lieutenant in the 7th Foot in June 1796 and rose through the ranks to become Lieutenant-Colonel in the 7th Foot in January 1812. He served in Halifax from 1796 to 1802; in the Bahamas until the end of 1804; at the siege of Martinique in 1808; subsequently in Spain and Portugal, and was present at the battle of Albuhera. He has was awarded a gold medal for the capture of Martinique, and a clasp for the battle of Albuhera. He became Lieutenant-Colonel in the 21st Foot on 6 June 1816, and was made a Companion of the Bath on 3 February 1817.
