71st Highland Light Infantry, a good quality William IV officer’s dirk, the gilt nail studded carved bog-oak handle complete with gilt ring, facetted stone and bonnet and broadsword/thistle panel, the saw-back blade etched with the regimental insignia and title, the Royal cypher and Thistle Motto, plus a full run of battle honours from Hindoostan to Waterloo; the black leather scabbard complete with four copper gilt mounts and companion small knife and fork, the latter a replacement, the top mount with spatulate St Edward’s crown numerals and bugle horn, a gold lace on scarlet morocco leather dirk strap (post 1856) is attached to the scabbard; retailed by Meyer & Mortimer Edinburgh, the blade pitted and with considerable wear to the etching, the bugle horn on the top scabbard mount fractured near the mouth-piece but present, the copper gilt mounts retain 90% original very fine fire gilt. £800-1000
Extensive correspondence sold with the dirk, mainly irrelevant as the dirk is assumed to be Victorian.
