Charles Grant Franco Edwards was first commissioned into the Dorset Regiment on 13 August 1879. He was appointed to the Indian Staff Corps in October 1881, and to the 5th Punjab Cavalry on 6 November that year. He served in the 1st and 2nd Miranzai expeditions in 1891 (Medal with clasp), and in the Punjab Frontier operations of 1897-98 (Medal with clasp). He was promoted to Major on 13 August 1899, and Squadron Commander, 5th Punjab Cavalry.
