Four: Private J. Oldfield, Yorkshire Light Infantry

Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 3 clasps, Transvaal, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902 (6200 Pte., Yorkshire L.I.); 1914 Star (6200 L. Cpl., Yorks. L.I.); British War and Victory Medals (6200 Pte., Yorks. L.I.); with memorial plaque (John Oldfield); and illuminated memorial scroll, all mounted on a contemporary display board and contained within an old oak glazed frame; together with a quantity of original documentation, including approximately 25 letters, mostly written by the recipient to his wife and vice versa; transmission slip for 1914 Star and a cutting from the staff magazine of W.H. Smith’s, which includes an obituary and photograph of recipient, generally extremely fine and a poignant lot (5) £250-300

John Oldfield was born at Whittlesea, Cambridge and enlisted at Pontefract. He was killed in action in France and Flanders on 28 October 1914 whilst serving with the 2nd Battalion, Yorkshire Light Infantry. His name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France. His entry in the C.W.G.C. register states that his real name was John Deverell and that he served under the alias of John Oldfield.
