James Kilby was born in 1924 and enlisted into the Royal Artillery at Preston on 2 May 1939. During the war he served in North West Europe from 11 June 1944 until 6 January 1945, and subsequently in India from July 1945 until October 1947. He was discharged from the Army on 3 July 1948, and was for a time employed as a Deckhand on a Fleetwood trawler. On 28 August 1949 he joined the Royal Australian Air Force, and became a Warrant Officer on 1 April 1971. He served in Vietnam with the Support Flight of No. 1 Operational Support Unit, from 21 January to 10 October 1971. He was discharged on 14 September 1978, his Certificate of Service confirming his post-war awards and Certificate of Outstanding Service.
