M.C. London Gazette 13 September 1918 ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This officer acted as liaison officer between regimental headquarters and the front line for two days and nights, continually carrying messages across the open under heavy shell and machine gun fire. When the line became disorganised owing to repeated enemy attacks he was always on the spot, where the situation was obscure or touch had been lost, reorganising and keeping regimental headquarters accurately informed as to the situation.’

Lieutenant George William Whittall died on 30 December 1919 whilst serving with the 3rd Dragoon Guards (Reserve of Officers). He is buried at Grayswood (All Saints) Churchyard, Witley, Surrey.
