Thomas Barnes was born in Maidstone, Kent, in January 1830, and joined the service as a Sailmaker’s Mate aboard H.M.S. LONDON on 9 December 1851, until drafted to EUROTAS for two months in January 1856. He was advanced to the rate of Sailmaker when he joined ROEBUCK in 1857, for service in China, and later served aboard EGMONT (1863-67) and ENDYMION (1867-70), with his last vessel being H.M.S. HECTOR (1870-72). He was awarded his pension and L.S. & G.C. rewards after completing 20 years service whilst aboard HECTOR on 30 October 1872, despite losing one Good Conduct Badge whilst aboard ENDYMION in April 1870.
