Born Crewkerne, Somerset on 20 October 1842. Joined the service as Boy 1st Class on 6 February 1861 aboard H.M.S. COLOSSUS, where he was advanced to Ord in 1863. Drafted to H.M.S. AURORA (1863 -67) where made an A.B. in 1866. Advanced to Leading Seaman in 1869 and attained Petty Officer status as 2nd Captain Quarter Deck (the term "After Guard" having been discontinued) in November 1870 whilst aboard OCEAN (1869-72). Served as a Petty Officer lst Class aboard H.M.S. RALEIGH (1874-77), and was transferred to the Coast Guard Service as a Boatman on 3 March 1878, rising to Commissioned Boatman in September 1883. Pensioned to shore on 20 May 1892 with 31 years servitude.
