Joseph Murphy was born in London on 29 June 1849. Joined the service as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. ENDYMION on 30 July 1863. During his time aboard H.M.S. FORTE (1868-71) as an Able Seaman, he was sent to prison twice and deserted on another occasion. Drafted to H.M. Ships ENCOUNTER and ACTIVE in August 1873 and January 1874 respectively, and invalided in October 1874 with less than three years service allowed to count.
