John C. Adams was born in Plymouth on 3 January 1832. First entered the service as a Painter aboard H.M.S. BRUNSWICK on 7 June 1858, serving commissions later aboard H.M. Ships TRAFALGAR (1860-64) and GLADIATOR (1864-68). Joined H.M.S. RATTLESNAKE 17 August 1870 as a Painter, discharged to H.M.S. FLORA as a Painter 1st Class on 20 November 1873 for a month before rejoining RATTLESNAKE until paid off on 25 March 1874. Pensioned to shore as a Painter 1st Class from INDUS 4 July 1878 with 20 years service.
