D.S.M. London Gazette 6 April 1918 “The following awards have been approved to the undermentioned men in recognition of their services in vessels of the Auxiliary Patrol between 1 January and 31 December 1917.”

H.M.S. CYGNI was originally the Portuguese Trawler MONCHIQUE, of 207 tons built in 1903, purchased by the Admiralty in 1915, and sold in May 1919.

S.G.M. 1918, Alfred Elsome, 2nd hand, H.M. Trawler CRUCIS “For outstanding bravery and courage displayed when the Steamship LORD CHARLEMONT was sunk without warning by a torpedo from a German Submarine 22 miles North from Alboran Island in the Western Mediterranean on 19 April 1918. Eight of the crew were killed in the attack. Elsome was awarded the medal in silver and two other crew members received the medal in bronze. Elsome was appointed Temporary Skipper R.N.R. on 29 April 1918 and demobilised in June 1919.
