Charles H. Cardell was born in Birmingham, Warwickshire, on 11 March 1857. After being a labourer, he first entered at Walmer in Number 14 Company as a Private Royal Marines on 11 September 1876. He served aboard H.M.S. ACTIVE (31 July 1878 to 25 October 1879) to gain this award, then drafted to MALABAR (1880-81) and CARYSFORT (1884-87). Whilst aboard CARYSFORT he earned an undated Egypt medal with Suakin 1885 clasp. Discharged to shore on completion of his 12 year engagement on 3 October 1888.
