Tom Corben was born in Portsmouth on 24 July 1855. He entered the service as an Assistant Butcher aboard H.M.S. SERAPIS on 1 September 1873, and advanced to Butcher in July 1875. He subsequently served aboard SIMOOM (1876-79), EUPHRATES (June 1880 to August 1881 and 12 July 1882 to 31 May 1884), CROCODILE (1881-82), ASIA (1885-86) and MALABAR (1887-96) where he was awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal on 30 January 1890 after 16 years service. He was discharged and pensioned to shore as a Butcher whilst aboard ST VINCENT on 3 December 1900 with 27 years servitude.
