James Forrest was born on 11 April 1859 in Manchester, Lancashire, and worked as a labourer before joining the Royal Marines on 11 April 1877. Following Recruit Training at the Walmer Depot he joined the Plymouth Division as a Private on 20 December 1877. On 4 May 1878 he deserted, but gave himself up two days later on 6 May. He served ashore at the Plymouth Depot until 6 June 1879 when he was attached to Royal Marine Battalion in South Africa until 20 August 1879. He next embarked aboard AGINCOURT (September 1879), ROYAL ADELAIDE (February 1881), and AGINCOURT (February 1881). He returned to the Plymouth Depot in January 1882 prior to joining TERROR (June 1882) and disembarked to the Plymouth Depot in November 1882. He next embarked aboard HIMALAYA for transport to Egypt for service with the Royal Marine Camel Corps in February 1884 and served with the Corps at the battle of Abu Klea, and subsequently, until invalided on 20 May 1885. He returned to the Plymouth Depot in the UK on 15 June 1885 but after survey was invalided ashore on 2 February 1886. He lost all entitlement to the L.S. & G.C. medal, having been assessed as ‘indifferent’, ‘fair’ or ‘good’ on numerous instances, and having been in cells or goal on more than ten occasions.
