Thomas Luckett was born in Islington on 31 February 1864, and worked as a cheesemonger before enlisting in the Royal Marines on 31 October 1882. Following Recruit Training at the Walmer Depot he was posted to the Portsmouth Division as a Private on June 1883 and embarked aboard H.M.S. ORION on 10 February 1884 for service with the Royal Marine Battalion in Egypt. He transferred to the books of BRITON in July 1884 for service on shore and took part in the Nile Expedition of 1884-85 and the battle of Abu Klea. He was embarked aboard TYNE for passage to England July 1887 and service at the Portsmouth Division, joined ASIA in February 1888 and served until October 1890 when disembarked to the Portsmouth Division. He was posted to BOADICEA in August 1891 and served in this ship until 23 October 1894, when he was disembarked to Portsmouth Division and discharged ashore on completion of his 12 year engagement. Character assessments of ‘good’ and ‘fair’ plus time spent in detention cells debarred him from consideration for a Long Service & Good Conduct medal.
