William Davis was born in St Helier, Jersey, on 4 April 1858. He entered the service as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. IMPREGNABLE on 13 January 1874 and advanced to Boy 1st Class in February 1875 before being drafted in May 1875. He subsequently served aboard TRIUMPH (1875-77) where he was advanced to Ord during August 1876, TOPAZE (1877-78) where he was made an Able Seaman in May 1878, THUNDERER (1879-81), and DASHER (1882-84) where he was made a Leading Seaman in December 1883. He earned this Egypt award whilst aboard TYNE (24 January 1885 to 7 March 1888) and in the same ship he gained his L.S. & G.C. medal as a Petty Officer 1st Class on 21 February 1888. He had been advanced to Petty Officer 2nd Class in January 1885 aboard the DUKE OF WELLINGTON, and to Petty Officer 1st Class in June 1886 aboard TYNE. He finished his career serving aboard RALEIGH (1889-91), VERNON (1892-94) and CENTURION (1894-95) and was pensioned to shore from VICTORY I on 17 April 1896.
