Thomas McCormick was born on 6 June 1864 in Calton, Lanark. He joined the service as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. IMPREGNABLE on 21 July 1879, and drafted to IMPLACABLE (1879-81) where he was advanced to Boy 1st Class during November 1880. He subsequently served aboard DEFENCE (1881-84) where he was made an Ord in October 1882, followed by ALBACORE (14 February 1884 to 8 June 1887) where he earned the Suakin campaign reward and advancement to Able Seaman on 1 April 1887, AJAX (1887-91), SUPERB (1891-93), and EDGAR (1893-96). On 5 July 1898 he became a Boatman in the Coastguard Service from which he was pensioned to shore on 17 April 1903. He joined the Royal Fleet Reserve on 12 October 1910, and although called up for WW1 as an A.B. on 2 August 1914 he was demobilised three days later. During his service career he lost one Good Conduct Badge which probably resulted in the loss a recommendation for a L.S. & G.C. medal.
