Frederick Andrews was born in Gosport, Hants, on 8 December 1862. He joined the Royal Navy as a Blacksmith aboard H.M.S. ASIA on 2 May 1884, and earned the Egypt and Burma awards whilst serving aboard TURQUOISE (16 May 1884 to 2 November 1887). He subsequently served aboard MONARCH (1889-90), UNICORN (1890-91), SIRIUS (1892-94) where he was advanced to Acting Chief Armourer on 1 October 1892, and was awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal on 7 June 1894. He continued to serve aboard VERNON (1895-97) then PORPOISE (1897-1901). He was pensioned ashore as a Chief Armourer on 19 April 1904, but was specially allowed to re-enter to serve as Chief Armourer at VERNON until 12 May 1909, when finally discharged ashore. Recalled for service during World War I, he served in VERNON from 2 August 1914 until August 1919 when he reverted to the Retired List, having been promoted to Temporary Warrant Armourer on 17 June 1917.
