Only 13 medals issued to the Royal Navy and Royal Marines with these clasps, eleven of whom were Royal Marines.

William Atherton was born in Liverpool, Lancashire, on 30 November 1862, and attested at Walmer on 30 May 1882.He served aboard SUPERB (1883-84), EURYALUS for Royal Marine Battalion (February to April 1884), SUPERB (1884-85), and in the R.M. Battalion, Egypt (March to May 1885). On his return home he was invalided from Plymouth Division and from the Corps due to heart disease on 16 March 1886.
