Joseph Jones was born in St Lukes, Old Street, Middlesex, on 7 December 1869. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. BOSCAWEN on 21 May 1885, and was later advanced to Boy 1st Class during February 1886. He subsequently served aboard H.M. Ships MINOTAUR (1886-87), NORTHUMBERLAND (1887-88) where he was made an Ord in December 1887, and PIGEON (15 March 1889 to 21 March 1892) where he received advancement to A.B. in July 1889. During service ashore with the ship's Naval Brigade he gained entitlement to the East & West Africa Medal with clasp ‘Witu 1890’. He next served aboard CHAMPION (1898-99) where he received advancement to Leading Seaman during November 1898, but was disrated to A.B. in March 1899, and discharged from the service on expiry of his 12 year engagement on 7 December 1899. Having deserted in 1894 he was ineligible for the L.S. & G.C. medal.
