Joseph Tinkler was born in Dublin, Ireland, on 16 February 1870, and was a blacksmith before entering the service aboard H.M.S. BANTERER as a Domestic 2nd Class on 4 April 1889 when aged 19 years. He joined VICTORY I (January 1892) as Acting 2nd Cook's Mate and advanced to Cook's Mate on 27 April 1892. In this rate he subsequently joined the following ships: BELLEROPHON (April 1892), VICTORY I (July 1893), HOWE (October 1893) being advanced to 2nd Ship's Cook on 25 November 1895, VICTORY I (April 1896), SPEEDY (July 1896), VICTORY I (May 1898), BLENHEIM (July 1898), and LINNET (August 1898). Whilst in LINNET he was advanced to Ship's Cook on 28 February 1900 and served off the China coast during the period June to December 1900.
He subsequently served aboard DUKE OF WELLINGTON (April 1901), MELAMPUS (September 1901), and VIVID I (June 1904) being advanced to Acting Chief's Cook on 1 October 1904. He next joined VULCAN (February 1905), VIVID I (March 1907), AMPHITRITE (June 1907), IMPREGNABLE (September 1907) being advanced to Chief Ship's Cook on 1 October 1907, HANNIBAL (May 1908), HIBERNIA (January 1909), VIVID I (March 1909), HIBERNIA (April 1909), and FORTH (January 1911).
He was pensioned ashore on 31 March 1911 after 20 years adult service, having been awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal in 1904 whilst serving aboard VIVID I. He joined the R.F.R. in April 1911 and was mobilised on 2 August 1914 as a Chief Ship's Cook, serving aboard VIVID I, DEFIANCE (March 1916), PRESIDENT II (August 1916) and VIVID I (October 1918) here he served until demobilised on 26 April 1919. He was discharged to shore from the R.F.R. as medically unfit on 19 April 1921, having completed two engagements of five years and having reached the compulsory retirement age of 50 years.
