Phillip Webb was born in 1809. He joined the Royal Navy as a Landsman aboard
H.M.S. JASEUR on 2 September 1828 when aged 19 years. He next served as an Able Seaman aboard DRYAD (August 1830), and CASTOR (September 1832), and whilst aboard the latter vessel he was disrated to Landsman on 20 October 1833 but regained his Able Seaman status on 29 November 1833. He subsequently served in this rate aboard CORNWALLIS (February 1837) and DRUID (July 1839). During a four year commission in the latter vessel he gained entitlement to the China 1842 medal. He next served aboard FISGARD (May 1843) and BELLEROPHON (October 1847) being rated Coxswain of the Launch. Awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal and Gratuity on 2 November 1850. Unusually he retained petty Officer status whilst continuing to serve as a Pensioner. Served as Captain of the Mast aboard CALLIOPE from December 1850 to June 1855, and subsequently joined SANS PAREIL in June 1855 and served as Captain of the Afterguard in this vessel during the Crimea War 1855-56 earning entitlement to the British and Turkish Crimea Medals, the former with clasp ‘Sebastopol’. Discharged to shore on 19 May 1856 and allowed to re-enter the service as a Petty Officer, Captain of the After Guard, aboard DONEGAL (May 1859). Served in this vessel until 10 August 1861 and was finally discharged from the Royal Navy after 29 years service.
