The latest know issue of any wide suspension medal. The earliest known narrow suspension medal dates to 22 February 1875.
Henry Mullins was born in the parish of Compton Abbas near Shaftesbury, Dorset, on 3 February 1836. He was a labourer prior to enlisting in the Royal Marines in February 1854 when aged 18 years, joining the 30th Company of the Portsmouth Division as a Private on 3 February 1854. He embarked aboard H.M.S. PRESIDENT (November 1854) and disembarked to the Portsmouth Division in July 1857. Next embarked aboard OSBORNE (August 1858) and returned to the Portsmouth Division in August 1859. Next afloat aboard QUEEN (November 1859) and served a full four year commission aboard this vessel prior to disembarking to the Portsmouth Division in December 1863. Promoted to Corporal on 22 January 1864 and transferred to the 38th Company. Embarked aboard HELICON (August 1866) returning to the Portsmouth Division in August 1867. Subsequently served afloat aboard LIVERPOOL (June l869), BARROSA (April 1870), ALGERINE (November 1870), PRINCE CHARLOTTE (June 1871) and ORONTES (March 1872). Returned to the Portsmouth Division in July 1872 and continued to serve on shore until pensioned on 2 March 1875 having served for 21 years. At the time of his discharge he is noted as being in possession of five Good Conduct Badges and a character rating of ‘Exemplary’. He was awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal in February 1875 with a £10 Gratuity.
