John Carr was born in Dunbar, Scotland on 15 January 1824. Having served a considerable time in merchant ships he was entered into the Royal Navy in the prime rate of Able Seaman on board H.M.S. WANDERER on 11 January 1848. Served aboard VENGEANCE from June 1850 until paid off in April 1855, and earned entitlement to the British Crimea Medal with clasp, ‘Sebastopol’ and the Turkish Crimean Medal. Served next aboard ARROGANT, was made Leading Seaman in February 1856, and joined the Coast Guard Service as a Boatman in March 1857, but he had to wait eleven years before advancement to Commissioned Boatman, in which rate he was pensioned on 31 May 1871, prior to the time when Coastguard personnel could earn L.S. & G.C. medals. He re-entered the service as an A.B. (Pensioner) on 18 July 1871 to serve aboard ASIA until finally discharged to shore on 11 October 1877, but this time with a long service award for his 27 years total service.
