At the outbreak of the 1914-18 war Ernest Enright was serving as a Master in the Mercantile Marine. He joined the Royal Navy Reserve as a Temporary Lieutenant on 4 August 1915, and his first appointment was the Command of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Vessel ISLA, a 980 ton steel hulled petrol carrier for submarines attached to H.M.S. DOLPHIN, Portsmouth. He was next appointed on 13 May 1916 to the Command of the 9,900 ton Royal Fleet Auxiliary Oiler, PETROLEUM, based at Portland. This vessel was the first Oiler in the Royal Navy. In the June 1917 Navy List he is shown as being on ‘Special Service’ and continues under this listing until demobilised at the end of 1918.
