On 6 June 1818 approval was given for the issue of a red worsted Torpedo Badge by the Board of Trade to officers and men of the Mercantile Marine. To qualify the seaman had to have been torpedoed or mined while serving on a British merchant or fishing vessel at any time during the war and have subsequently completed another voyage of at least one month’s duration.
