The Fishery Reserve consisted of men of the Fishing Fleets who had retired or taken jobs ashore who volunteered to return to service in times of conflict so as to allow younger men of the fishing fleets to enrol in the R.N.R. These men, many in their late 50s and early 60s, braved the harsh elements of the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean as well as the threat from enemy submarines and surface vessels, often in unprotected ships, to ensure that the British people received adequate supplies of fish throughout the war.
