M.C. London Gazette 14 November 1916: Temporary Second Lieutenant A. E. Brunning, General List and Machine Gun Corps ‘For conspicuous gallantry in action. When the enemy were delivering a strong attack he showed great initiative and courage in the handling of his machine gun. His distinguished conduct greatly assisted the infantry in retaining the position.’

Albert Ernest Brunning served overseas with the Royal Naval Armoured Car Division until these Naval units were disbanded and amalgamated into the Army from the middle of 1915. Brunning was accordingly commissioned ‘from Royal Naval Armoured Car Division’ as Temporary Second Lieutenant with effect from 12th March 1916, and transferred into the Machine Gun Corps. He was promoted to Lieutenant in August 1917 and relinquished his commission in November 1920.
