D.S.M. London Gazette 15 May 1916 ‘The following awards have been approved in recognition of services rendered by Petty Officers and Men of the Eastern Mediterranean Squadron between the time of the landing in the Galipolli Peninsula in April 1915 and the evacuation in December 1915 and January 1916.’
The following official recommendation for was taken from Admiralty records: ‘Thomas C. H., Ordinary Telegraphist, H.M.S. LORD NELSON, Stationed (on shore) at No. 1 Wireless Station, Cape Helles. He has served continuously since 25 April 1915 displaying great ability and resources on all occasions.’
Cyril Thomas served as an Ordinary Telegraphist aboard the battleship H.M.S. AUDACIOUS which was sunk by an enemy mine on 23 October 1914. He was transfered to the QUEEN ELIZABETH, and later to EURYALUS for landing training. He was involved in shore-ship communication during the whole period of the stay on the Peninsula and along with two others carried on behind the retreating troops until they had re-embarked on the lighters. After a successful retreat he rejoined the Monitors.
