M.C. London Gazette 18 October 1917. ‘When conveying eight ammunition wagons to the battery position they came under very heavy shell fire, and several casualties occurred. Although himself severely wounded, he showed the greatest coolness and resource, and with the help of a warrant officer collected all the teams and got them to a place of safety. He then walked to the dressing station, where it was found that a piece of shell had penetrated his lung. No praise can be too great for his splendid pluck and devotion to duty.’
