Robertson Fleet was born in Montreal in June 1888. He attended McGill University and attested for the 35th Battery, 11th Brigade, C.F.A., in September 1915. Commissioned in February 1916, he arrived in France in July 1916 and was gassed on 21 August 1916. After recovery he was transferred to the 3rd Divisional Ammunition Column, and subsequently to the 11th Brigade and the 9th Brigade. He assumed command of the 38th Battery, 10th Brigade, C.F.A., on 18 January 1919, but left France the following month and returned to Canada, via England, arriving at Quebec on 17 August 1919.
